How To Wave Your Hair The Old Fashioned Classic Hollywood Way

There is something totally glamorous about good old fashioned Hollywood hairstyles, just think of Marilyn's platinum blond waves and Audrey Hepburn's Breakfast at Tiffany's up-do. Veronica Lake was a star of the screen in the 1940's - just compare her softly waving hairstyle below to that of Sienna's.

More and more Hollywood celebrities of the present day are returning to the classic styles of the old silver screen stars and starlets, perhaps because the female filmstars of the last century had true iconic style and glamour? If you want to create these retro curls and waves with your own hair here's how to do it in a few easy steps.

Sienna with her modern classic Hollywood waves

  • You will need to blowdry your hair to create body with this style, so we suggest either spritzing your hair so that it's damp or wash and condition and towel dry.
  • Start with a side parting on the side you prefer, then apply some smoothing hair serum to control frizz and protect your hair whilst blowdrying.
  • Add a little volumising mousse to the roots of your hair to create some body.
  • Using a large, round brush, blowdry your hair until you have a smooth but bouncy style. It's easier to pin up the top layers of your hair and start by blowdrying the bottom layers, and then work through your hair unpinning a section at a time, until you have dried all sections completely.
  • SJP has tamed her curls here into smooth classic waves

  • Next heat up a medium sized curling tongue and starting from the front sections of your hair curl the lengths, leaving the roots flat. When each curl is done pin them to your head to hold the curl with a hairgrip until all the curls are finished. Leave the curls for 10 minutes and then remove the hairgrips and brush out the curls to create bouncy, flowing waves.
  • If you have any little flyaway hairs appearing on the crown of your head, rub a tiny amount of smoothing serum on the palms of your hands and gently smooth the hair, without flattening the body you have created.
  • Megan Fox with a modern twist on the classic Hollywood waves

  • Finish with a light spray of hairspray to lock in your style and to keep those beautiful waves looking gorgeous.

How To Create The Latest Celebrity Hair Trend - Fishtail Plaits

Fishtail plaits are the lastest hair trend to hit the celebrity red carpets as well as the fashion show catwalks this season. Celebrities from Rihanna to Fearne Cotton have been wearing this stylish look, and the fashion house Missoni literally made headlines when they styled all of their models in twin fishtail plaits worn forward at their Autumn/Winter shows. If you fancy having a go at recreating this look for yourself here's how to do it. All you will need is roughly shoulder-length hair, some hair elastics and hairspray.

How To Create A Fishtail Plait

  • We'll first look at creating a single fishtail plait worn to the side like Fearne. Draw your hair into a low ponytail to one side of your head, don't worry if wisps of hair are left out of the pony tail as his look is meant to have texture.
  • Then divide your ponytail into two sections - you will need to look into a mirror when you are doing the next part.
  • Take about a third of one of your sections of hair from the back of the section, and pull it around to the front, then draw it across so that you can hold it with the second section.
  • Fearne Cotton with a casual side fishtail plait

  • Moving onto the second section of your hair, repeat the above, taking about a third of the secton from the back of the second section of hair and pull it around to the front of your plait, and cross it over so you can hold it with the first section of your hair.
  • Continue repeating the above two steps, you should start to see the fishtail appear after another couple of times of pulling your hair around to the front and crossing over to the opposite section.
  • Keep on pulling sections of hair across until you reach the bottom of your plait, and secure with a hair elastic.
  • Then gently pull wisps of hair from your plait to give a textured look, and finish with hairspray to hold in place.

How To Create Two Fishtail Plaits

  • If you want to create the Missoni twin fishtail plait look, then divide your hair as you would do for pigtails, and follow the above steps for each plait. When they are finished, pull them so they hang to the front of your shoulders framing your face, and use hairspray to hold in place.

Five Easy Tips To Create Celebrity Ponytail Hair Styles

Do you think of the ponytail as something boring, or a rather childish hairstyle? Well think again, as this season the red carpets and Hollywood venues have been strewn with celebrities such as Amanda Seyfried and Reese Witherspoon sporting their own special versions of this classic hair do. Different celebrities each have their favourite versions, and here are a few of them, along with easy tips on how to create each different style of ponytail.

The Sixties Hi-Top Pony Tail Worn By Reese Witherspoon

We think this style suits Reese down to the ground and it is surely inspired by the glamour of the sixties. To create this look, first use a hair-straightener or large curling tong to create flicks at the ends of your hair. Next create some height on the crown of your head by gently backcombing your hair with a narrow tooth comb. Then gather your hair into a high pony tail and fasten with a neutral hair band. Finish by hiding the backcombing by smoothing over your hair from the front section.

The Low Casual Knot Worn By Amanda Seyfried

Think thirties casual Hollywood waves in this beautiful relaxed hair-do. Unless you have naturally waved hair, create horizontal waves down your hair in the thirties style with rollers. Then secure your hair into a ponytail low down at the nape of your neck using a neutral elastic, leaving some waves free around your face to frame it. Then take the ends of your ponytail and tuck them back up through the elastic to create a casual loose knot.

The Sharp Parting Worn By Jessica Lowndes

This style can look severe, but you can choose whether to make your sharp parting straight down the middle of your head, or to the side - if you choose the side, curve the parting from the crown of your head. Then run straighteners through your hair to create a sleek style. Finally pull your hair back to the nape of your neck using a paddle or bristle brish to create a smooth and sleek finish, and fasten with a band.

The Face Framer Worn By Anne Hathaway

Some have commented that Anne looks just a tiny bit nerdy here, but I like this style – its pretty and casual. It’s also great if you are in a hurry, and want to jazz up your hair when you don’t have time to wash and style it. Pull your hair back into a pony tail, and then loosen the strands around the face. Then using either dry shampoo or some hair mousse accentuate the wisps to frame your face.

The Glamorous Back Ponytail Worn By Selena Gomez

This ponytail does require some pretty hefty hair length, but you could always cheat with clip in hair extensions. Prepare for this look by plaiting your hair overnight or for several hours before an evening out. You can add a styling product to help the waves stay in place if you need to. Secure the hair at the nape of the neck using a glamorous hair band and then brush through the lengths. Loosen the front sections, and if you need to add some waves with a large curling tong. This look is fabulous with a backless or strappy dress.

Katy Perry is Bold And Beautiful - And You Can Be Too When You Create The Katy Perry Makeup Look

Katy Perry is known as the beautiful American singer, songwriter and actress who married Russell Brand in 2010. She is also known for her unconventional style, which can often be humerous, bright and reminiscent of decades past. Strangely she likes to use fruit shaped accessories, mostly watermelons, as part of her outfits. She says she was inspired by the 1997 film adaptation of Lolita and she describes her style as a "concoction of different things". When it comes to makeup she usually has signature red lips, and her makeup and hairstyles call to mind other celebrity beauties like Dita Von Teese or even Elizabeth Taylor in her twenties. If you want to create Katy's makeup look, here's some tips on how to do it.

How To Create Katy Perry's Makeup Look

Foundation: First choose a foundation that blends naturally with your own skintone. One of the main things you see when you look at Katy is her perfect complexion. She herself uses foundation and powder, so don't be afraid to use it youself, but stick to a natural, light shade.

Translucent Powder: Don't use bronzer, but dust a small amount of translucent power over your face, particularly in areas which tend to be more oily.

Blusher: Choose a powder blusher in a baby pink tone, one that reminds you of the 50s era - think Marilyn Monroe, and blend this in along your cheekbones, rather than over the apples of your cheeks.

Lips: Apply a matte lipstick in cherry red, fuschia or magenta. Apply one layer, blot with tissue, and then apply a further layer. Keep the look matte and not glossy - again a throwback to the era of the early sirens of the silver screen.

Eyebrows: These should be pencilled in with a dark brown eyebrow pencil, ensuring they have an alluring arch in the middle.

Eyes: Use a set of false eyelashes and apply them to your upper eyelid - they need to be the long and luscious kind that Katy uses. Blend them in with some black gel eyeliner and black mascara on both your upper and lower lashes. Your eyelids do not need any colour, but you can use a neutral shadow to shade along your socket line if you want to add more depth.

Hair: To finish off your look style your hair with either large heated rollers or curl with hair straighteners or a large barrelled curling tong to create filmstar waves.

How To Give Your Hair A Fresh Look For Spring In Ten Minutes

We've been looking forward to Spring for a few weeks now, and one thing that says Spring to me is starting to wear some pretty coloured springtime clothes, and also having a a change of hairstyle for the new season - something to make me feel special. We don't always have the time or the money for a major hairstyle change, and what if we change it and then don't like it - it can be a waste of money as well as making you want to hide your head in a paper bag. So how about some easy makeover tips that allow you to change your hairstyle as you go, with no need for breaking the bank, or ruining your tresses with bleaches and tints. There are lots of little things we can do to create diffent looks and styles easily.

Clip-In Highlighted Hair Extensions

Have you noticed how celebrities are able to change their hair length from one moment to the next - they are using clip-in hair extensions. These can be clipped in and taken out easily for a versatile look, and are widely available from department stores.

Low Shabby Chic Bun

I love this kind of look, I like to call it the shabby chic version of the tight ballerina bun which has been in style for the past few seasons. The low bun is pretty easy to achieve, run some serum through dry hair, then gather your hair into a low, loose ponytail, letting any face-framing locks fall around your face. Twist the pony tail around, then secure it with some hair pins, leaving it fairly roughed up. Use some diamante pins for a more glam style.

Natural Curls Rule

For so long we have been heating and ironing our locks each day to create a perfect, smooth style, so perhaps now it's time to let your hair do it's own thing. If you have waves or curls, accentuate them by using a curling mousse or hair styling product and drying your hair with a diffuser. Curly hair needs to be kept moisturised to keep away the frizz. If your hair is very curly scrunch up your curls when you have washed your hair and leave to dry naturally, moving your hair around as little as possible to allow the curls to "set". It's amazing the difference this makes, if your friends are used to seeing you with straight hair, surprise them with your natural look.

Pixie Hairstyle - Try It Without Cutting off Your Locks

You could call this the faux pixie look - we have seen many celebs going the whole "snip" and having their hair styled into the short, cropped pixie look such as Helen Mirren and Emma Watson. But if you like the look, but want to keep your tresses long you can create a temporary pixie style. Apply a serum to damp hair and blow dry smooth, then create a severe side parting and slick the hair back on the side of the parting using a hairbrush sprayed with hairspray. With the hair on the opposite side, pull it across your forehead, then start to twist the hair around above your ear, continue to the back of your head, and secure with hair grips or pins. Try and end the roll at the back of your ear on the other side, tuck in the ends and secure. Spritz with hairspray again to hold in place.
